Core Roman virtues of social and personal character
Dignitas and gravitas were both fundamental, interrelated concepts in the Roman mindset. While dignitas represented the social standing, prestige, and moral worth a citizen earned, gravitas represented the internal seriousness, self-discipline, and moral rigor required to maintain that standing. Together, they were considered essential virtues for Roman leaders and citizens to embody the ideal of romanitas.

Social stratification and the acquisition of Dignitas
Dignitas was a social concept deeply tied to a Roman citizen's reputation, status, and family standing, which were often contingent upon property ownership and political influence. In contrast, the capite censi represented the lowest social stratum, possessing little to no property, which effectively excluded them from the traditional avenues of acquiring and maintaining the level of dignitas expected of the Roman elite.
The aquila as a symbol of Roman dignitas
The aquila (legionary eagle) served as a physical manifestation of the collective dignitas of a Roman legion. Because dignitas encompassed a Roman's reputation, honor, and standing, the loss of an aquila was considered a profound source of shame and a direct blow to the honor and status of the legion and the Roman state, reflecting the high stakes of maintaining dignitas in Roman culture.
