A trireme was an ancient vessel and a type of galley that was used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean Sea, especially the Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. Salamis or Salamina is the largest Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, about two kilometres from the coast of Athens' port of Piraeus and about 16 km west of Athens center.
