Atlas is a Titan in Greek mythology who was condemned to hold up the heavens or the sky for eternity following the Titanomachy. He is frequently associated with the extreme western edge of the world, a location later linked to the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa.
Beyond his physical burden, Atlas was regarded as a figure of great intellect. He was credited with expertise in philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy. In various traditions, he is celebrated as the inventor of the celestial sphere and even the foundational principles of astronomical science.
