Diana is a major deity in Roman religion, serving as a patroness of the countryside, wildlife, and the hunt. Her domain also encompasses childbirth, the night, and the Moon. While she shares many attributes with the Greek goddess Artemis, Diana possesses an independent origin rooted in Italian tradition.
Over time, Roman mythology integrated much of the Artemis mythos into the story of Diana. This includes her birth on the island of Delos to the parents Jupiter and Latona, as well as her role as the twin sister of the god Apollo.
