The caduceus is a distinctive herald's staff associated with Hermes in Greek mythology. It is visually defined by a short staff entwined by two serpents, and it is frequently topped with a pair of wings. This symbol represents the authority and role of a messenger.
While most famously carried by Hermes, the staff was also used by other heralds, such as Iris, the messenger of Hera. In Roman iconography, the staff is closely associated with Mercury, who is typically depicted holding it in his left hand as he performs his duties as the messenger of the gods.
